Standing on nearby Fyrish Hill is an unusual Indian Gateway Monument, built in the late eighteenth century by the orders of Sir Hector Munro, a steep incline but very manageable with wonderful views of the Cromarty Firth and the surrounding area.
Deep within a wooded glen, a comfortable walk from the house,
lies the Black Rock Gorge, formed during the last Ice Age, glacial meltwater cut deep into the bedrock to form this remarkable ravine, well worth a look. (some filming for Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire film also took place here).
Walk up into the hills with mountain back-drops, the road from Assynt House will take you to Loch Glass (pictured on the left) which is a wonderfully peaceful walk. You could also take a challenging bike ride to the loch and its downhill all the way home!
The 3432ft Ben Wyvis (‘Wyvis’ is Gaelic for ‘Enormous’) is a haven for alpine flora and unusual mountain birds and offers fantastic
views of the North East Highlands. |
