things to do

The Highlands of Scotland has a great many activities on offer, all of which we would be happy to arrange for you, below we have listed some of the activities on offer, some fabulous walks and some great days out!

For Salmon and Trout Fishing we recommend local fishing professionals TroutQuest. Enjoy guided excursions to fish for salmon on the River Alness or brown trout on one of the many beautiful lochs in the area.

TroutQuest has access to prime salmon & sea trout fishing on the private beats of the River Alness and can offer Assynt House guests weekly or day permits subject to availability. If you aren't familiar with fishing, fly fishing instruction is available on a private stocked lochan on the nearby Novar Estate. They can also arrange tuition and rod hire. During the month of July 2012 Assynt House can offer weekly lets with two complimentary rods on the Novar beats of the River Alness.

Cromarty Sea Angling charters are perfect for mixed groups of anglers and non anglers, the area is rich in wildlife so those who do not wish to fish will be  entertained by the varied wildlife that can be seen from the boat.

We can arrange driven pheasant and partridge shooting for experienced groups of between 6 and 9 guns on an exclusive nearby estate including vehicles to the drives, lunch and refreshments.

Many of the top golf courses in the north of Scotland are within a forty mile radius of the house. Go north and admire the stunning views of Brora, Golspie and Tain all of which are pay and play courses. Play one of the highest regarded courses in the area, Royal Dornoch with stunning views over the Dornoch Firth, recently rated in the top fifteen courses in the world or the home of the 2012 Barclays Scottish Open, Castle Stewart Golf Links, only 30 minutes drive away.

Head south towards Inverness and choose from Fortrose & Rosemarkie, Nairn, the Walker Cup venue in 1999 and Nairn Dunbar, a highly rated championship links course, offering some of the best golfing land in the area.

Take a boat trip out in the Cromarty Firth and go Dolphin watching and see some of our wildlife up close, including seals and red kites. You could also take a sunset boat trip with wine and BBQ for your party or just take a walk out to Chanantry Point on the Black Isle to see if you can spot bottlenose dolphins at the turn of the tide.

Horse riders can trek along scenic forestry paths locally, there is also the options of individual instruction, pony rides (age 4 upwards) even 'own your own pony' days.

Choose a relaxing, serene canoe trip which can be tailored for the whole family or an adrenaline filled afternoon in more challenging waters. If you really want to get really wet try gorge walking, it's not as scary as it sounds! We recommend local company Boots 'n' Paddles for canoeing, gorge walking and many of the outdoor sports available.

The Highland destination for Skiing is Aviemore, which is just over an hours drive from Assynt House, a great day-out, you don't need to have any of our own equipment or clothing and the slopes cater for beginners and experienced skiers alike. There is also ski instruction available and a Reindeer Park, wildlife park and theme park nearby.

Outdoor activity specialists, Boots 'n' Paddles bring archery to the house, perfect for all the family to get involved. You don't have to worry if you are a beginner, archery is great fun for all ages and abilities, local instructors will guide you through the techniques before any light hearted competition begins!

Mountain biking is a fun way to enjoy the outdoors and there are some fantastic places to cycle on our doorstep, If you are looking for a quieter cycle amongst some beautiful scenery cycle Loch Glass at the end of our road or a have a day out on the Black Isle at Learnie Red Rocks, perfect mountain biking trails, special features and wonderful views! You don't need to bring your own bike as we can hire bikes for the week for you and the kids or just for the day, with pick up and drop off at your chosen destination.

Quad biking for 8 years and over, ranging from beginners flat tracks to more challenging trail rides through woodland and moorland. Supervised by qualified instructors.

There are lots more great activities available, just enquire if your chosen activity isn't listed and we will endeavour to find it for you!
